WARDOGS Helicopter Controls: Learn to Fly and Land

Build a predictable flight layout, separate lift from direction, and practice short landings before trying a full squad transport run.

A WARDOGS helicopter needs four main inputs: collective for lift, pitch for nose movement, roll for bank and yaw for heading. A keyboard and mouse layout to build from

Check direction before carrying passengers

  1. Use an available range or suitable low-pressure test session. Confirm that you are in the pilot seat and that the current client supports the practice area you selected.
  2. Test each assigned input briefly. Check pitch, roll and yaw independently, and verify that collective increases and decreases in the intended direction.
  3. Check whether your mouse is controlling flight or free look. Bind those jobs so that a camera movement does not unexpectedly become a large aircraft input.
  4. Start from a known assist and sensitivity setup. Change only one option between tests; do not turn every assist off and then attempt to identify the source of a wobble.
  5. Check map, voice, camera and exit/interact actions while still on the ground. For a gamepad or HOTAS, also check the layout when leaving the vehicle.

First exercise: lift, hover, return to the same spot

Increase collective gradually until the aircraft lifts clear of the ground. Keep the first attempt low and short enough that you can return to the starting area. Use small corrections and let the response settle before adding more input.

Watch the horizon and nearby ground references. If the aircraft drifts, check its attitude instead of immediately making a large opposite correction. Alternating large left and right inputs can turn a small drift into an unstable hover.

Reduce collective gently to descend and settle back onto the landing area. Repeat the same small exercise until lift-off and touchdown feel predictable. A successful fast flight is less useful at this stage than three controlled short landings.

Second exercise: move, turn and slow down

From a stable hover, use a small forward pitch input to begin moving. Collective and pitch do different jobs: pitching forward changes attitude, while collective helps manage lift. Pulling harder on one control cannot replace learning the other.

Choose a short route with a large return area. Make a gentle heading change, then return toward your starting point. Leave enough room to slow down and stabilize before descending.

Approach a landing area with reduced speed and a clear escape direction. Level out and establish control before the final descent. If the approach becomes unstable, abandon it early and make another circuit instead of forcing a landing among friendly players.

Turn flight practice into a useful transport job

Before departure, agree on a destination and landing approach with the squad. Check the objective map and leave space for enemies to contest the landing area. A helicopter reaching the zone is only useful if passengers can dismount and reach cover.
