WARDOGS does not currently offer official Linux support. The developer’s current compatibility update says Proton support is still being worked on and cannot be promised for the September 10 Early Access launch. An earlier Alpha or Beta working on Linux does not establish support for the current build or the main game.
What Linux players can rely on today
The published PC release targets Windows. The current Linux compatibility update also explicitly separates previous successful Alpha/Beta sessions from an official support commitment. There is no confirmed date in that update for a supported Linux/Proton release.
This means a working clip from the August test is useful history, but not a reason to promise access to the September test or launch build. The main game and Playtest have separate Steam entries, and a different client or anti-cheat configuration can change the outcome.
If Linux is your only gaming platform, wait for confirmed compatibility with the build you intend to play. Do not assume an Early Access purchase guarantees that compatibility.

Launching the executable is only one checkpoint
Proton provides a way to run many Windows games through Steam on Linux. For an online game, reaching the menu is only part of compatibility: the current anti-cheat integration and server authorization also need to accept the session.
A graphics problem, a missing library and a server-side compatibility restriction are different faults. If the current build does not support the required Linux authorization path, lowering shadows or switching controller layouts cannot fix it.
Never delete, replace or disable anti-cheat files to force an online session. Unsupported bypasses can break the installation and do not create official compatibility.

What to record if a supported build still fails
Keep a small reproducibility note instead of cycling through random launch options. Record the Steam entry, game build, distribution version, GPU/driver, Proton version and the exact stage where the failure occurs. Add whether the problem happens before the menu, during authorization or after joining.
Change one setting at a time and retain the baseline. When requesting help, a precise error message and short reproduction are more useful than a claim that “Linux is broken.” Remove account tokens, private paths and personal information before sharing logs.
Successful compatibility testing should include launching, entering a server, playing through a representative session and reconnecting after a restart. Frame rate and input usability are additional checks, not substitutes for online access.
Steam Deck and purchase expectations
Steam Deck normally uses SteamOS, so the same Linux compatibility question comes before handheld graphics tuning. A generic “Playable” claim from another game or a video of a prior WARDOGS test does not settle the current game’s status.
